Ensuring a healthier food environment and access
for all citizens of Barry County.

Inspiring Healthy Choices for Work, School, and Play

At B.Healthy, we believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food—because healthy communities start with healthy choices. Barry County, one of the most diverse food-growing regions in the U.S., is rich in locally produced food, and together, we can make it even more accessible for all.

We invite you to take part in the B.Healthy movement! Through farmers markets, farm stands, and community gardens, we’re creating opportunities for families to connect with fresh, local food. Our healthy food preparation classes and school programs are shaping a culture where people of all ages can build lifelong, nutritious habits.

Join us in making Barry County a place where everyone has access to healthier food—where they work, learn, and play. Together, we can grow stronger, healthier communities!

Community Gardens

At B.Healthy, we promote and offer assistance to establish community gardens. The advantages of community gardens extend far beyond providing fresh produce for the gardeners. They foster social connections and a sense of belonging among community members. Residents come together, share knowledge, and collaborate in nurturing the garden from planning and planting, culminating in the celebration of a shared harvest. This shared experience promotes a strong sense of community and helps combat isolation and disconnection.

Farmers Markets & Workshops

From spring through fall, farmers markets across Barry County bring fresh, locally grown food directly to our communities, ensuring that everyone has access to healthy, nutritious options. These markets not only provide a convenient way for residents to purchase fresh produce but also serve as gathering places that strengthen our local food system and economy.

At B.Healthy, we are committed to supporting both farmers markets and the farmers who make them possible. We work to enhance market accessibility, promote community engagement, and ensure that locally grown food reaches as many people as possible. Beyond market support, we also design and lead workshops for local farmers, equipping them with the resources and knowledge needed to grow and sustain their small farm businesses.

Mill Street Market

B.Healthy Barry County is leading a collaborative effort with the Barry Community Foundation to bring a new community food center, the Mill Street Market to Barry County. The Mill Street Market facility will feature a Farm Stop local foods grocery store, cafe, commercial and teaching kitchen, as well as a much needed daycare center.

The Mill Street Market will focus on providing convenient, equitable access to fresh, locally sourced foods to all residents in Barry County. It will be located on the banks of the Thornapple River across from the Thornapple Plaza and is part of a new residential development bringing 135 new apartments to Hastings.

Food Distribution

At B.Healthy, we believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food—regardless of income or location. Unfortunately, many individuals and families in Barry County face barriers to affording or accessing healthy options. To bridge this gap, we work alongside Barry County United Way, Southwest Michigan Food Bank, and the B.Healthy Food Council to bring food directly to those in need. Through mobile markets and food distribution centers, we ensure that fresh, locally sourced food reaches underserved areas, making it easier for all residents to enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet. By removing barriers and expanding opportunities, we’re committed to creating a more equitable, food-secure community—where everyone has the nourishment they need to thrive.
